Toni Morrison Leaves Behind Incomparable Legacy

Toni Morrison passed away on Aug. 5, 2019. She leaves behind a body of work and a legacy that most of us dream about.

Toni Morrison quote: "We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives."

Morrison published 11 novels, including her first, The Bluest Eye. Morrison wrote the book in her free time while working as a book editor.

Other Morrison titles (paid link) include Song of Solomon and Beloved. The latter book is about an escaped slave who’s haunted by the ghost of her dead baby.

It was her ability to connect the horrendously tragic African American past to the ongoing struggles of present day that helped Toni Morrison’s fiction make a significant impact.

As noted in her New York Times obituary, Morrison “was one of the rare American authors whose books were both critical and commercial successes.”

Indeed, Morrison’s books graced bestseller lists. Four of her novels made Oprah’s Book Club.

And Morrison was awarded often and frequently.

Perhaps her greatest recognized achievement was winning the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature. She was the first African-American woman to receive the award.

As news broke of Morrison’s passing, accolades and obituaries came pouring forth.

Below are a few such posts from social media, as well as links to some long-form tributes to the late author.

Toni Morrison was 88.
